Video view rate calculator

Calculate your video view rate against two different, clearly labeled bases: by impressions (views ÷ impressions × 100, how often something shown was actually watched) or by reach (views ÷ reach × 100, how often a unique viewer who saw it watched). The two use different denominators and this tool never blends them into one unlabeled number — pick the basis your platform’s analytics actually gave you.

Total views the video received.

Measure against

Impressions and reach are different denominators — pick whichever your platform's analytics gave you.

Total times the video was shown.

View rate (by impressions)

25%

Formula

View rate = views ÷ impressions × 100

How to use the video view rate calculator

  1. Enter your video views. Type the total views the video received.
  2. Choose impressions or reach. Pick whichever base your platform’s analytics reported.
  3. Enter that base figure. Type the impressions or reach number matching your choice.
  4. Read the labeled view rate. The result always states which basis it was calculated against.

Worked examples

2,500 views on 10,000 impressions

2,500 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = a 25% view rate by impressions.

The same views against reach instead

The same 2,500 views against 5,000 reach gives 50% by reach — a different, larger number because the denominator is smaller and means something different.

Video view rate calculator FAQ

Why does the calculator have two different bases?
Because impressions and reach measure different things — total times shown versus unique accounts shown to — and platforms report both, so blending them would hide which one a number reflects.
Which basis should I use?
Whichever your platform’s analytics actually gave you for that video — the formula is the same division either way, just against a different denominator.
Can view rate by reach exceed 100%?
No — reach and impressions both count "shown to" events at least as often as "viewed" ones, so views can’t exceed either base in a correctly-reported dataset.
What counts as a "view" on most platforms?
It varies by platform (some count a view after 2-3 seconds, others longer) — this calculator applies the formula to whatever view count your platform reports.
Does this calculator store my numbers?
No — the calculation happens entirely in your browser as you type, and nothing is uploaded or saved.
Is a higher view rate always better?
Generally yes as a sign of a compelling video, though comparing view rates across very different video lengths or formats can be misleading.
