Instagram Reel length checker

Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts each define a different maximum — and a separate cutoff for whether the algorithm will actually show it to new viewers.

Reels vs TikTok vs Shorts

Instagram Reels

Up to ~15 min (API); in-app flows up to 20 min

Only Reels under ~3 minutes are eligible for algorithmic recommendation to non-followers.

TikTok

10 min in-app recording; longer via upload for many creators

Every account can post at least 3-minute videos; some accounts unlock 5- or 10-minute videos.

YouTube Shorts

3 min (180 seconds)

Raised from 60 seconds in October 2024 — a hard cap, not a recommendation cutoff.

How to compare Reel and Short lengths

  1. Check the hard maximum for your platform. Confirm the technical upload ceiling for the exact platform you are publishing to, since the three formats do not share one number.
  2. Check the discovery cutoff separately. A video can be under the technical maximum but still miss algorithmic recommendation — Instagram in particular only surfaces Reels under about 3 minutes to non-followers.
  3. Match the aspect ratio, not just the length. All three short-form formats expect a vertical 9:16 video, so a correctly timed clip in the wrong aspect ratio still performs worse in-feed.
  4. Re-export rather than trim in the composer. Cut the video to length in your editor before scheduling, since none of these platforms’ APIs trim a video for you.
  5. Recheck before repurposing across all three. A single video edited once for the tightest limit, currently YouTube Shorts at 3 minutes, will fit inside all three platforms without a platform-specific re-cut.

Worked examples

A 2-minute video repurposed across all three

A 2-minute video fits YouTube Shorts’ 3-minute maximum, TikTok’s 10-minute in-app recording limit, and Instagram’s roughly 3-minute algorithmic discovery cutoff — one edit, three platforms.

A 5-minute TikTok upload

A 5-minute video already exceeds both YouTube Shorts’ 3-minute cap and Instagram’s roughly 3-minute discovery cutoff, so it needs a separate, shorter cut for those two even though it still fits comfortably inside TikTok’s 10-minute in-app limit.

An 8-minute long-form clip

An 8-minute video cannot publish as a YouTube Short or as an Instagram Reel eligible for recommendation — it needs trimming to under 3 minutes for those two, though it still fits under TikTok’s 10-minute in-app limit.

Reel and Short length FAQ

How long can an Instagram Reel be?
Instagram Reels can run up to about 15 minutes through the API and even longer through some in-app upload flows, but only Reels under roughly 3 minutes are eligible for algorithmic recommendation to people who do not already follow you.
How long can a TikTok video be?
Recording directly in the TikTok app caps a video at 10 minutes. Uploading a pre-recorded file allows longer videos for many creators, and TikTok’s own developer documentation states every creator can post at least 3-minute videos, with some accounts able to post 5- or 10-minute videos.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
YouTube Shorts can run up to 3 minutes (180 seconds), a limit YouTube raised from 60 seconds in October 2024.
What length performs best for short-form video?
Published maximums are far longer than what tends to perform best — independent analyses of millions of Reels and Shorts commonly find videos in the 30-to-60-second range earn the highest engagement and view rates.
Do these formats all use the same aspect ratio?
Yes — Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts are all designed around a vertical 9:16 frame, so one correctly cropped export generally works across all three.
Can one video be published as a Reel, a TikTok and a Short without re-editing?
Yes, as long as it is under about 3 minutes and cut to a vertical 9:16 frame — that satisfies the tightest of the three limits, YouTube Shorts, and comfortably fits inside the other two.
Does a longer Reel or Short get penalized?
Not directly — a video within the technical maximum is not penalized for its length alone, but Instagram’s algorithmic-recommendation cutoff around 3 minutes means a longer Reel reaches only your existing followers rather than new viewers.
