Hashtag limits by platform

How many hashtags each major platform actually enforces, and what happens once you go over — pulled from the same limits registry SkedCast’s own composer validates against.

Hashtag limits, platform by platform

X (Twitter)

No cap

No fixed cap — hashtags are ordinary characters inside the 280-character limit.

LinkedIn

No cap

No fixed cap — no enforced hashtag count on a standard post.

Instagram

30

Hard cap — Meta’s caption spec allows 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @-mentions.

Facebook Pages

No cap

No fixed cap — hashtags are ordinary characters inside the post-text limit.

TikTok

No cap

No fixed cap — limited only by the 2,200-character caption.

YouTube

15

Hard cap — over 15 and YouTube stops displaying every hashtag on the video.

Threads

1

Only the first hashtag is a tappable link; extras render as plain text.

Pinterest

No cap

No fixed cap — hashtags share the 800-character Pin description.

Bluesky

No cap

No fixed cap — hashtags share the 300-grapheme post limit.

Telegram

No cap

No fixed cap — hashtags share the 4,096-character message limit.

Instagram’s 30-hashtag / 20-@-mention cap and YouTube’s 15-hashtag cap come from each platform’s own published caption specification. Every other platform above does not publish a dedicated hashtag limit — your hashtags simply consume characters from that platform’s caption or post-text limit (see the character and posting limits lookup).

How to use a hashtag count safely on every platform

  1. Check the platform’s real cap. Look up the table above before you write your hashtag set, since only Instagram, YouTube and Threads enforce a hard limit.
  2. Stay well under Instagram’s 30. Treat 30 as the point where Instagram stops counting, not a target — many high-performing captions use far fewer tags.
  3. Never exceed YouTube’s 15. Adding a 16th hashtag does not just drop the extra one — YouTube discards every hashtag on the video.
  4. Put your one Threads hashtag first. Threads links only the first hashtag in a post as a tappable tag, so lead with the one that matters most.
  5. Treat the rest as a caption-length problem. On X, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, Bluesky and Telegram, hashtags simply consume characters — check the caption counter instead.

Worked examples

A 31st hashtag on Instagram

Instagram’s own caption specification allows 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @-mentions per post — add a 31st hashtag and the platform stops counting the extras rather than rejecting the post outright.

One extra hashtag breaks YouTube’s tags entirely

A video description with 16 hashtags loses all 16 — YouTube’s policy is all-or-nothing once you cross its 15-hashtag limit, not a soft cutoff at the 16th.

Ten hashtags on a Threads post

Post ten hashtags on Threads and only the first becomes a clickable tag; the other nine sit as plain text and still count toward the 500-character limit.

Hashtag limits FAQ

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?
Instagram enforces a hard technical cap of 30 hashtags per caption, alongside a separate limit of 20 @-mentions, from Meta’s own caption specification. Many accounts get better results from a small, relevant set rather than maxing out the count.
What happens if you use too many hashtags on YouTube?
YouTube enforces a 15-hashtag limit on video descriptions. Add a 16th and the platform does not simply drop the extra one — it stops displaying every hashtag on that video.
Does TikTok have a hashtag limit?
TikTok does not publish a fixed hashtag count. In practice your hashtags share the same 2,200-character caption as your text, so the caption limit is the real ceiling.
How many hashtags does Threads let you use?
You can type as many hashtags as fit inside the 500-character caption, but only the first one is turned into a clickable, searchable tag — the rest render as plain text.
Is there a hashtag limit on X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, Bluesky or Telegram?
No platform in that group enforces a dedicated hashtag cap. Hashtags are ordinary characters there, so the platform’s caption or post-text limit is what actually constrains you.
How many hashtags should you actually use?
It depends on the platform and the audience, but a smaller set of specific, relevant tags routinely performs as well as maxing out a platform’s technical limit — treat the numbers above as ceilings, not targets.
Do hashtags count against a platform’s character limit?
Yes — on every platform a hashtag is made of ordinary characters, so it always counts toward that platform’s caption or post-text limit even where there is no separate hashtag cap.
