What counts as an emoji?
Whatever is shown as an emoji under Unicode’s emoji standard. Many emoji are several code points drawn as one picture, so the tool works on whole characters as you see them: a flag or a family is one emoji, and nothing is left behind when it goes. Symbols that show as plain text, such as © and ™, stay.

Why remove emoji from a caption?
Screen readers read each emoji’s name aloud, so a row of them slows a listener down; check a caption with the accessibility checker. Emoji also count toward character limits, two each on X; count a caption with the caption counter. To add emoji back where they help, use the emoji picker.

- Every character shown as an emoji under Unicode’s emoji rules: emoji by default, flags, keycaps, and symbols shown as emoji by a variation selector. Text-style symbols such as ©, ® and ™ are kept.
- Does it count a flag or family emoji as one or several?
- One. A flag, a family joined with zero-width joiners or a skin-toned emoji counts and is removed as a single emoji.
- Does it remove the variation selector too?
- Yes. When a symbol is shown as an emoji by the variation selector U+FE0F, the symbol and the selector are removed together.
- Will removing emoji change any other characters?
- No. Letters, numbers, punctuation and spacing are left exactly as they were.
- Does it store or send my text anywhere?
- No. Counting and removal happen in your browser; nothing you paste is sent to a server.
