Instagram posting schedule: best times

There is no single best time to post on Instagram, but both 2026 studies point at the middle of the week. Buffer’s analysis of 9.6 million posts found Thursday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at noon and Wednesday at 6 p.m. strongest; Sprout Social found Tuesday 1–7 p.m. and Wednesday 12–9 p.m. On frequency, Buffer’s own data suggests 3–5 feed posts a week plus one or two Stories a day, and a manager survey found most people land at 2–5 posts a week.

Key takeaways

  • Wednesday leads in Buffer’s data (9.6M posts) and sits inside Sprout Social’s Tuesday–Wednesday afternoon window — the one point both studies share.
  • Buffer reports Friday and Saturday as the weakest days; Sprout Social reports weekends weakest.
  • Reels in Buffer’s data follow an evening pattern (6–11 p.m. midweek); carousels peak Wednesday noon and 6 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m.
  • A frequency of 3–5 posts a week is Buffer’s figure; a 100+ manager survey found 2–5 posts a week most common.

What's the best Instagram posting schedule, according to published research?

Each row is one published analysis, read from its own page on 2026-09-23. They measure different samples over different periods, so they are listed side by side rather than merged into one number.

SourceSampleWhat it reported
Buffer (updated Sep 2026)9.6 million posts from 200,000+ accounts, Jan 2024 – Dec 2025; median engagement rateTop slots: Thursday 9 a.m., Wednesday 12 p.m., Wednesday 6 p.m. Best days: Wednesday, then Thursday and Tuesday. Weakest: Friday and Saturday.
Sprout Social (published 31 Mar 2026)Nearly 2 billion engagements across about 307,000 profiles, 27 Nov 2025 – 27 Feb 2026Best days: Monday to Thursday. Best times: Tuesday 1–7 p.m. and Wednesday 12–9 p.m. Worst days: weekends.

Do the studies agree, and how much should you trust them?

They agree on the middle of the week and on weak weekends. The overlap — Wednesday from midday into the evening — is the safest place to start. Buffer’s Thursday 9 a.m. peak has no counterpart in Sprout Social’s Tuesday–Wednesday afternoon window, so it is worth testing as a separate slot.

Both large studies express times as the audience’s local time: Sprout Social records every time in local time (a 9 a.m. window is 9 a.m. in Los Angeles, London and Sydney alike), and Buffer says to “consider all the recommendations local time”. If your audience is spread across time zones, schedule for the zone where most of your followers are.

Every figure here is an aggregate across many accounts and industries. It tells you where to start testing, not when your audience is online.

How often should you post on Instagram?

Buffer’s own data points to 3–5 feed posts a week (plus one or two Stories a day), and HeyOrca’s survey of more than 100 social media managers found 2–5 posts a week most common (41% at 2–3 a week, 38% at 4–5). The two are consistent: a steady handful of posts a week, not daily posting, is the mainstream benchmark.

Do Reels, carousels and Stories have different best times?

Buffer’s Instagram analysis splits by format: Reels follow the same midweek evening pattern (6–11 p.m.), carousels peak at Wednesday noon, Wednesday 6 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m., and for Stories Buffer recommends one or two a day rather than a specific hour. If you post more than one format, schedule them into different windows so they do not compete for the same audience at once.

Can you schedule Instagram posts natively, and what does SkedCast add?

Instagram has built-in scheduling in the app for photos, carousels and Reels — Sprout Social’s guide gives the limits as up to 75 days ahead and 25 posts a day, while Instagram’s own Help Center page (read 23 September 2026) lists up to 30 days — and Instagram announced in March 2026 that scheduling was opening to all public accounts rather than only Professional ones. It schedules one account at a time, with no bulk import.

Instagram posts through SkedCast follow the same rules as the composer: up to 2,200 characters, with at least one image or video required.

SkedCast holds a scheduled post and publishes it at the time you set, from one calendar shared with every other connected account, with the same per-platform limits checked when you schedule rather than at publish time. Scheduling never changes when your audience is online; it only makes sure the post goes out in the window you chose.

  • Instagram posts need at least one image or video — a text-only post cannot be published through the API.
  • Publishing through SkedCast needs an Instagram Professional (Business or Creator) account.
  • Feed posts, carousels (images and videos mixed), Reels and Stories are all supported; a single video defaults to a Reel.
  • SkedCast schedules Instagram itself and publishes at the set time — Instagram’s publishing API has no schedule parameter.

How do you find your own best time to post on Instagram?

A study average is a starting hypothesis. Your account’s own results are the evidence. A simple test:

  • Pick two or three candidate windows from the studies above (for example a weekday morning, a weekday afternoon and an evening) rather than one “best” hour.
  • Post the same kinds of content into each window for at least three or four weeks, so one viral post cannot decide the result.
  • Compare each window on median engagement rate (engagements divided by reach or followers), not raw likes, so a bigger post does not win by size alone.
  • Keep the winner, keep testing one challenger, and re-check every quarter: audiences and platform behaviour drift.

Where does SkedCast’s best-times feature fit?

SkedCast’s best-times feature does the “find your own window” step for you where the data exists: a daily job reads each connected account’s own publish history and the engagement analytics SkedCast has ingested for it, and recommends the day-and-hour slots where that account’s posts did best, in the account’s own time zone. It never invents a slot — an account with no analytics data yet simply has none — and how much it can derive depends on what each platform exposes to third-party apps. The same slots are available through the API (GET /v1/best-times, scope besttimes.read) and the MCP get_best_times tool. Best times is included from the Solo plan.

FAQ

What is the best time to post on Instagram?
There is no single best time. Wednesday leads in Buffer’s data (9.6M posts) and sits inside Sprout Social’s Tuesday–Wednesday afternoon window — the one point both studies share. Treat published averages as a starting point and test windows against your own audience.
Does Instagram have built-in scheduling?
Instagram has built-in scheduling in the app for photos, carousels and Reels — Sprout Social’s guide gives the limits as up to 75 days ahead and 25 posts a day, while Instagram’s own Help Center page (read 23 September 2026) lists up to 30 days — and Instagram announced in March 2026 that scheduling was opening to all public accounts rather than only Professional ones. It schedules one account at a time, with no bulk import.
Can SkedCast pick the best time to post on Instagram for me?
It recommends day-and-hour slots per connected account from that account’s own publish history and the engagement analytics SkedCast has ingested, refreshed daily. It does not invent a slot when there is no data yet, and how much it can derive depends on what the platform exposes to third-party apps.
Is Wednesday really the best day to post on Instagram?
Buffer’s 9.6 million-post analysis ranks Wednesday first, and Sprout Social’s best-time windows include Wednesday, so it is the most consistent finding. It is still an aggregate: test it against your own account.
Should I post Reels at a different time from feed posts?
Buffer’s data shows Reels following a midweek evening pattern (6–11 p.m.) while carousels peak around Wednesday noon and 6 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m., so staggering formats is reasonable.
What is the recommended Instagram posting schedule?
Start from the overlap in both 2026 studies — Wednesday from midday into the evening — at a frequency of 3–5 feed posts a week plus one or two Stories a day (Buffer’s own figures), then adjust from there based on your own account’s results.
