Scheduling troubleshooting

Can’t schedule Reels on Instagram? Here's the fix

Can’t schedule Reels on Instagram? It is almost never because Reels are unsupported — they publish through the same Instagram Graph API path as any other Instagram post on SkedCast. It means one specific requirement on the video, the account type, or the connection was not met.

Key takeaways

  • Reels are a fully supported Instagram post type on SkedCast, published as a REELS container through the Graph API.
  • Instagram requires a Professional (Business or Creator) account — a personal Instagram account cannot be connected at all. SkedCast connects through Instagram Login, so no linked Facebook Page is needed.
  • The video itself has to pass Instagram’s own validation (format, duration, aspect ratio) before a Reel container will finish processing.
  • A Reel is media-required — there is no text-only Reel, so a caption alone will always fail validation.

Can’t schedule Reels on Instagram? Start with the account type

The single most common reason a Reel will not schedule is the connected Instagram account itself: Instagram’s publishing API only works with a Professional (Business or Creator) account, connected through Instagram Login — no linked Facebook Page is needed. A personal Instagram account cannot be connected at all, Reels included, regardless of how the post is composed.

Video validation

Once the account type is right, the video file itself has to clear Instagram’s own processing: a supported format and aspect ratio, and a duration within Instagram’s limits. SkedCast polls the container Instagram creates until it reports FINISHED or an error — an error here means Instagram itself rejected the file, and the specific reason is shown on the failed post.

  • A Reel needs a video — there is no text-only or image-only Reel
  • Very long or oddly-cropped source video is the most common processing failure
  • A carousel can mix image and video items, but a Reel itself is always a single video

Where to actually look

Every scheduled post lives on the Calendar (/calendar in the console) — a month/week grid you can filter by client, platform and status. Click a scheduled post there to open its detail sheet and see its exact status, target account and any error.

A post that failed validation before it was even queued shows up under Drafts (/posts/drafts) instead of the calendar, and a post that failed to publish after being queued shows up under Failed (/posts/failed) with the reason.

FAQ

Does SkedCast actually support scheduling Instagram Reels?
Yes — Reels publish through the same managed Instagram Graph API path as any other post type, as a dedicated REELS container.
Can I schedule a Reel to a personal Instagram account?
No — Instagram’s publishing API only works with a Professional (Business or Creator) account, which you can switch to in the Instagram app. This applies to every post type, not just Reels.
Why did my Reel fail during processing?
Most often the video itself: an unsupported format, an unsupported aspect ratio, or a duration outside Instagram’s limits. The failed post shows Instagram’s own reason.
Can a Reel have a caption but no video?
No — every Reel on Instagram requires a video; there is no text-only or image-only Reel.
How many items can an Instagram carousel include next to a Reel?
A carousel supports up to 10 items and can mix images and video, but that is a separate post type from a Reel, which is always a single video.
Does scheduling a Reel count differently against my daily cap?
No — a Reel counts as one post like any other, within the same 80-posts-per-day, 15-minute-spacing cadence SkedCast applies to the whole account.
