A subject shot in front of an evenly lit green backdrop typically keys out cleanly at around 20-40% tolerance, leaving the subject fully opaque and the background fully transparent.

How to use the background remover
- Upload an image with a solid-color background. A green screen, blue screen or any flat, even-colored backdrop works best.
- Pick the key color. Use the green-screen or blue-screen preset, or click "Pick from image" and click the actual background pixel in your photo.
- Adjust tolerance. Raise tolerance to remove a wider range of similar shades; lower it to keep the removal tight and precise.
- Adjust edge softness. A higher softness blends the removed edge more gradually, reducing a harsh, jagged cutout line.
- Download the transparent PNG. The result downloads as a real PNG with an alpha channel wherever the key color was removed.
Worked examples
Why a normal photo background does not key out well
A typical photo background (a room, outdoors, a gradient) has hundreds of different shades, not one solid color — raising tolerance enough to remove all of them usually starts removing parts of the subject too, which is exactly the warning this tool shows above 85% removal.
Background remover FAQ
- Does this tool use AI to remove the background?
- No — it is real chroma-key color-keying, the same technique a physical green or blue screen uses, not an AI model. That is stated plainly because it is a meaningfully different (and more limited) technique than AI background removal.
- Will this work on a normal photo with a busy background?
- Not reliably. Chroma-key only works well against one genuinely solid, even color — a real photo background usually has too many different shades for a clean key.
- What is "tolerance"?
- How close a pixel's color must be to the key color to be removed — higher tolerance removes a wider range of similar shades, but risks removing part of the subject if set too high.
- What is "edge softness" for?
- It blends the transition at the removal boundary instead of a hard on/off cutoff, giving a less jagged, more natural-looking edge.
- Does the tool upload my image anywhere?
- No — everything runs in your browser via the Canvas API; your image is never uploaded to a server.
- What file format does the result download as?
- A PNG, which supports the transparency (alpha channel) the chroma-key removal produces — JPEG cannot represent transparency.
