What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a link's URL — such as utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign — that let analytics tools attribute traffic and conversions back to the specific post, platform, or campaign that sent the click. Without them, that traffic just shows up as generic, unlabeled referral traffic.

What are UTM parameters used for?#

UTM parameters don't need any special software to work — they're just standard URL query parameters — but most analytics platforms (Google Analytics, and social platforms' own dashboards) recognize the standard utm_* names automatically and use them to group traffic.

FAQ

Do UTM parameters change where a link goes?
No — they're appended to the URL and read by analytics tools; the link still opens the same destination page, just with extra tracking data attached to the address.
