# Connect VS Code to SkedCast with MCP
URL: https://skedcast.com/developers/guides/mcp-vscode

VS Code reads MCP servers from an mcp.json file: a workspace-level .vscode/mcp.json (good for a team, committed to the repo) or a user-profile file. VS Code handles the OAuth sign-in for you.

## The connection
Property | Value
Endpoint | `https://api.skedcast.com/mcp`
Transport | Streamable HTTP
Auth | OAuth 2.1: the client runs the sign-in for you. The MCP server does not accept API keys.
SkedCast plan | MCP access depends on your SkedCast plan (see pricing).
Tools | 79 tools: 44 that read and 35 that change your workspace. See the MCP tools reference for the full list.

## Last checked 2026-11-04
These steps follow Visual Studio Code's documentation as of 2026-11-04. Menus and plan rules change. If a step differs in your version, follow Visual Studio Code's page: https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/copilot/customization/mcp-servers

## Add SkedCast to VS Code
Open the Command Palette and run MCP: Add Server for a guided setup, or create `.vscode/mcp.json` in a repo root to share the server with your team. A user-profile mcp.json keeps it to you.

## mcp.json: a remote server uses type http and a url.
```json
{
  "servers": {
    "skedcast": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://api.skedcast.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

## Sign in and use it
On the first connection VS Code opens a browser for the OAuth sign-in. Then open Copilot Chat in agent mode, check the tools list for SkedCast's tools, and ask Copilot to check or schedule posts.

## Plan requirement
The `chat.mcp.access` setting controls which MCP servers VS Code may use, so your organization can restrict it. Check GitHub Copilot's documentation for what your plan includes. SkedCast's MCP access depends on your SkedCast plan (see the table above).

## Write tools change your workspace
The write tools (the ones that create, edit, reschedule, cancel or delete things) are marked non-read-only. A well-behaved MCP host asks you to confirm before the agent calls one. The agent's effective power is always your scopes ∩ your access, so it can never do more than you could do by hand.

## FAQ
**Q: Should the config go in the workspace file or my user profile?**
A: The entry holds only the URL, and each person signs in with their own SkedCast account. Put it in .vscode/mcp.json to share it with your team, or in your user profile to keep it to you.

**Q: Why don't I see SkedCast's tools in Copilot Chat?**
A: Check that Copilot Chat is in agent mode and that the server shows as running. Also check the chat.mcp.access setting, which can block MCP servers.
